What happens if you miss a deadline

Late filing attracts fixed administrative penalties (based on taxable income), and outstanding tax accrues interest at the prescribed rate. Filing on time — even when you cannot pay in full — keeps the late-filing penalty off the account.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does tax season 2026 open and close in South Africa?
For the 2026 filing season, the deadline for non-provisional individual taxpayers is 23 October 2026, and provisional taxpayers and trusts have until 22 January 2027. SARS typically opens auto-assessments in early July and manual filing from mid-July; confirm the exact opening date on the SARS filing-season page.
When is the provisional tax deadline for 2027?
Provisional individual taxpayers and trusts must file their 2026 income tax return by 22 January 2027. Separately, provisional tax payments (IRP6) for a February year-end are due by 31 August 2026 (first period) and 26 February 2027 (second period), with an optional third top-up by 30 September 2027.
When are VAT201 returns due?
VAT201 returns and payments are generally due by the 25th of the month following each bi-monthly VAT period. For example, the January–February period is due 25 March and the March–April period is due 25 May. Monthly VAT filers submit by the 25th of the following month.
When is monthly PAYE (EMP201) due?
Monthly PAYE, UIF and SDL are declared on the EMP201 and are due by the 7th of the month following the payroll month. For example, March payroll is due 7 April. When the 7th falls on a weekend or public holiday, the deadline moves to the last business day before it.
When are the EMP501 reconciliations due?
There are two EMP501 employer reconciliations per year. The annual reconciliation (1 March to 28/29 February) is due by 31 May, and the interim reconciliation (1 March to 31 August) is due by 31 October.
What happens if I miss a SARS deadline?
Missing a SARS deadline can trigger administrative penalties for late filing (fixed monthly amounts based on taxable income) plus interest at the prescribed rate on outstanding tax. File on time even if you cannot pay in full — late-filing penalties are separate from payment, and a payment arrangement can be requested.
