What makes a valid SA tax invoice?
SARS requires specific fields on every tax invoice issued by a VAT-registered vendor. A tax invoice that is missing any of these fields can be rejected by SARS during an audit, and the buyer may lose their input-VAT claim.
- The words “TAX INVOICE” in a prominent place
- Supplier’s name, address, and VAT registration number
- Buyer’s name (and VAT number if invoice is for more than R5,000)
- A unique, serialised invoice number
- Date of issue
- A description of the goods or services supplied
- Quantity or volume supplied
- Value before VAT, VAT amount, and total — or the statement that VAT is included
