Percentage calculator: the formulas
How it's worked out
Free percentage calculator. Find a percentage of a number, what percent one number is of another, a percentage increase or decrease, or add and subtract a percentage for discounts. Every answer shows its formula.
A percentage is a number out of 100. The six calculations above use these formulas:
X% of Y = X ÷ 100 × Y
X is what % of Y = X ÷ Y × 100
% change = (Y − X) ÷ X × 100
Add X% to Y = Y × (1 + X ÷ 100)
Subtract X% from Y = Y × (1 − X ÷ 100)
X% of Y% = X ÷ 100 × Y
Percentages in business
Discounts, price rises and profit all come down to percentages, but the base matters. A mark-up is a percentage of cost and a margin is a percentage of the selling price, so the same price gives different figures: use the markup calculator or the gross margin calculator for pricing. For adding or removing VAT, use the VAT calculator, which handles prices that already include VAT.
