About the PA(SA)

The PA(SA) — Professional Accountant (South Africa) — is awarded by the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA). It is a shorter and more accessible pathway than the CA(SA), making it popular among candidates who want to enter the profession without the extended CTA and articles route. PA(SA)s are qualified to prepare financial statements, submit tax returns, provide business advisory services, and act as accounting officers for close corporations. The qualification is well-recognised in the South African market, particularly among SMEs and private practices.

Entry Requirements

  • National Senior Certificate (matric) with Mathematics (not Maths Literacy)
  • SAIPA-accredited qualification: BCom Accounting, National Diploma in Accounting, or SAIPA Professional Evaluation
  • Some pathways accept candidates without a degree if they hold an ICB or equivalent qualification
  • Strong numerical and organisational skills

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to become a PA(SA)?
The PA(SA) pathway typically takes 4–5 years: 3 years for an accredited degree or diploma, followed by the SAIPA Professional Evaluation and 1–2 years of practical training. It is a shorter route than the CA(SA).
What does a PA(SA) earn in South Africa?
PA(SA) salaries typically range from R250,000 to R500,000 for those with 1–5 years of experience. Senior practitioners and those running their own practices can earn R500,000–R800,000+. Earnings depend on specialisation, location, and whether you run your own practice.
Is the PA(SA) recognised internationally?
SAIPA is a member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), which gives the PA(SA) international standing. However, it does not have the same direct reciprocal agreements as the CA(SA). PA(SA)s looking to work abroad may need to write additional exams depending on the destination country.
