About the CFP®

The Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) designation is the gold standard for financial planning professionals in South Africa, awarded by the Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa (FPI). CFP® professionals provide holistic financial advice covering retirement planning, investment management, estate planning, tax planning, risk (insurance) planning, and healthcare planning. The designation is internationally recognised through the Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB), with CFP® certification available in 27 countries. In South Africa, CFP® professionals must be registered as Financial Service Providers (FSPs) or representatives under the FAIS Act.

Entry Requirements

  • National Senior Certificate (matric) with Mathematics
  • FPI-approved postgraduate diploma in Financial Planning, or a BCom with financial planning modules
  • Alternatively: relevant professional qualification (CA(SA), ACCA, CFA) plus FPI bridging requirements
  • Must pass the FPI Professional Competency Examination

Pathway to Qualification

Academic Qualification

Complete an FPI-recognised qualification in financial planning. This is typically a BCom (Financial Planning) or a Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning from a recognised university (UFS, UP, UJ, Milpark, etc.).

Professional Competency Examination

Write and pass the FPI Professional Competency Examination — a case-study-based exam testing your ability to create comprehensive financial plans covering retirement, investment, estate, tax, risk, and healthcare planning.

Practical Experience

3 years (can run concurrently)

Complete a minimum of 3 years of supervised practical experience in financial planning. This can include work at a financial planning firm, bank, insurance company, or independent practice.

CFP® Designation

Register as a CFP® professional with FPI. You must adhere to FPI's Code of Ethics, maintain annual CPD requirements, and comply with the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services (FAIS) Act.
