About This Template
A written employment contract for a domestic worker, laid out as numbered clauses you fill in and print: parties, start date and duties, ordinary hours and overtime, pay, UIF, leave, and notice. The pay clause works out the weekly and monthly minimum from the hours you enter and flags a rate below the national minimum wage of R30.23 per hour (from 1 March 2026; it changes on 1 March 2027). Hours, overtime, leave and notice follow the Basic Conditions of Employment Act and Sectoral Determination 7, as summarised on our domestic workers page.
Who Is This For?
Households that employ a cleaner, nanny, gardener or caregiver and want the terms of employment in writing before the first day of work.
How to Use This Template
- 1Download the Excel file. It also opens in Google Sheets.
- 2Fill in the employer and worker details, start date, place of work and duties.
- 3Enter the days and hours worked each week and the hourly rate. The sheet shows the weekly and monthly pay and warns you if the rate is below the minimum wage.
- 4Review the leave, notice and UIF clauses and adjust anything you have agreed that is more favourable to the worker.
- 5Print two copies, sign and date both, and give one to the worker.
- 6Reread the clauses when the minimum wage changes on 1 March, and update the Rates sheet.
Why South African Businesses Need This
A signed written contract removes doubt about hours, pay, leave and notice for both the household and the worker. Domestic workers are covered by the Basic Conditions of Employment Act and Sectoral Determination 7, so the contract cannot give the worker less than they provide.
