Check extracted bank statement totals against your PDF

Check opening balance, money in, money out and closing balance after PDF extraction. Use a balance checker and review mismatches before CSV import.

Upload statement PDFs

How does this work?

For a deposit account, opening balance plus money in minus money out should equal the closing balance when all amounts cover the same statement period and currency. Compare extracted transactions with the printed PDF totals. A matching balance is a useful check, but it does not prove every row or description is correct.

Updated · Accounter product workflow guide

  1. 1.Use one account, currency and complete statement period. Read opening and closing balances from the PDF, not from an extraction you are trying to verify.
  2. 2.Sum extracted credits as money in and debits as money out. Do not include opening balances, closing balances or summary totals as transactions.
  3. 3.Enter the four values in the balance checker below. Use negative opening or closing balances if the deposit account is overdrawn.
  4. 4.If the result differs, check missing pages, signs, fees, duplicated rows and whether booked transactions were confused with pending transactions.
  5. 5.Review descriptions and individual rows even when totals agree. Download CSV through your Hub account only after checking the source.

Deposit-account balance checker

Use one statement period and currency. Opening and closing balances can be negative; enter money in and out as positive totals. Calculated in your browser.

Enter all four figures to compare the balances.

This arithmetic check does not examine your PDF or verify extraction accuracy. Credit card amounts owed may follow a different convention.

Try statement extraction

Preview the extracted rows before downloading. CSV downloads require an account and available credits. For batch processing, sign in and use available page credits from a purchased pack or subscription. Enter passwords per file when prompted.

Example: a R150 mismatch

Fictional deposit-account example: opening balance R1,000, credits R2,000 and debits R750 imply a closing balance of R2,250. If the PDF closes at R2,100, the difference is R150. An omitted debit of R150 would explain this difference, but so could other combinations. Locate the source transaction instead of inserting an unexplained adjustment.

Troubleshooting your statement

The difference equals a bank fee

Check whether fees appear in the transaction table or a separate statement section. Include a fee only once if it has already been posted as a transaction.

The opening balance is negative

For a deposit-account balance check, preserve the minus sign. A negative balance is not a new outgoing transaction.

Totals match but rows look wrong

Equal and opposite mistakes can cancel each other. Review dates, descriptions, signs and repeated amounts against the PDF as well.

Frequently asked questions

Does a matching closing balance prove extraction accuracy?+

No. Missing transactions and duplicates can offset one another. Matching totals supplement row-level review; they do not replace it.

Can I use this equation for credit cards?+

This checker uses the deposit-account convention. Credit card amounts owed commonly use a different direction: opening debt plus purchases and charges minus repayments and refunds. Use the credit card extraction guide and your statement convention.

Does the checker upload my figures?+

The balance checker calculates in your browser. It does not submit its entered figures to an extraction API.

Should I add a balancing transaction?+

Do not invent a transaction to force the result to match. Find the discrepancy in the original PDF and correct the affected row or source document.
