Review duplicate transactions in an extracted bank statement CSV

Identify possible duplicate rows after statement extraction or overlapping PDF imports. Compare source pages before removing legitimate repeated transactions.

How does this work?

A possible duplicate should be checked against the original statement before removal. Compare account, date, amount, reference, description and source page. Repeated dates or amounts alone do not establish duplication: two genuine purchases may look similar, and a reversal is a separate transaction.

Updated · Accounter product workflow guide

  1. 1.Keep an untouched copy of each CSV and identify the PDF, account, currency and statement period it came from.
  2. 2.Flag rows that share date, amount and reference as candidates for review. Do not delete them automatically.
  3. 3.Locate each candidate in the original PDF. Check overlapping monthly statement periods and repeated imports of the same file.
  4. 4.Keep genuine repeated purchases and separate reversals. Remove a row only when you have confirmed it duplicates the same source transaction.
  5. 5.Recheck totals and closing balance after changes, then import the reviewed file once.

Try statement extraction

Preview the extracted rows before downloading. CSV downloads require an account and available credits. For batch processing, sign in and use available page credits from a purchased pack or subscription. Enter passwords per file when prompted.

Example: repeated purchase or duplicated import?

Fictional example: two R99 card purchases share a date and merchant name. If both appear as separate entries in the PDF, retain both. If a single source transaction appears once in January’s PDF and again in an overlapping February export, keep its provenance and prevent it from being imported twice. A date-and-amount match needs source verification.

Troubleshooting your statement

The same PDF was extracted twice

Compare outputs and choose one reviewed version for import. Keep the other as a reference rather than adding all its rows.

A refund has the same amount as a purchase

Check the direction, date and reference. A refund or reversal can legitimately offset the original transaction; do not collapse the pair into one row.

Monthly statements overlap

Check the exact transaction dates and source periods. Preserve distinct accounts and currencies and verify candidates in both PDFs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I deduplicate by date and amount?+

Use that combination to flag candidates, not as an automatic deletion rule. Genuine transactions can have the same date and amount.

Does this page automatically clean my CSV?+

No. It explains a review workflow and offers statement extraction. It does not upload or automatically deduplicate a CSV.

Will checking the closing balance find all duplicates?+

No. Other omissions or sign mistakes may offset duplicated amounts. Check both individual source transactions and totals.

Should I combine statements from several accounts?+

Only with account and currency identifiers preserved. Similar transactions across accounts may be transfers, not duplicates to delete.
